THE SECOND PHASE

The French were fighting in the high mountains, on the right side of the attack deployment of the American Fifth Army, embroiled in the Cassino plain. Their position relative to the Gustav Line was further inland than that of their Downstream Allies; on their left there was in fact the lower Rapido valley and the Montecassino ridge, while in front they had the peak of Mount Cifalco.
